Children’s Day in India

The birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is celebrated as Children’s Day in India. Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, was born on 14 November. Apart from being known for his skills as a statesman, Nehru was also immensely fond of children. He thought of children as the future of the Nation and they needed the utmost of care. He wished that his birthday would be celebrated as Children’s Day. So, since his death in 1963, his birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day in India. This year my father was visiting the children in our Victory Home on this festive occasion. From the time the bus began arriving with the children from the local town, the air was buzzing with excitement!Rebecca.com

Everyone lines up and sings the Indian national anthem and then children lay a floral tribute in honour and memory of the one they call Chacha Nehru (Nehru Uncle).

Then all the children head inside for a day of special programmes, for this day will be enjoyed differently from all others. It is the teachers who will perform all the songs, skits, dances, and share their talents, much to the delight of the children. This went on for the whole day, interspersed with special treats and a lunch on the grounds!

The Logos School continues to grow and has proven to be a wonderful solution of “integrating” the Victory Home children into the community of other children who do not suffer with HIV/AIDS. Sadly, all previous attempts to enroll them in the local government schools was only met by them being ostracized because of fear and ignorance. The starting of the Logo School has proven to be a very wise step. Timoti and the school staff have demonstrated that a loving example and kind words can go a long way in shaping young lives. The children are building healthy relationships and learning what life in a community can be.

Before my father said goodbye to all the children, especially those living in our Victory Home, he shared gifts that we sent them to express our love. As soon as the bracelets came out, they were on and the children wanted to have a photo taken! Be encouraged, these children are for most part thriving. Yes, they face physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges (just like all of us), but God is caring for them through your continuous gracious support. Thank you for investing in a life!
